Chronic Pain Common Among Car Accident Victims
The car accident study, which was published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research on March 21, 2011, looked at 2,069 people who provided information about musculoskeletal pain and associated distress at three times over the course of four years. Participants in the study were also asked if they had recently experienced any of the following six physically traumatic events: car accident, surgery, workplace accident, hospitalization, fracture, or childbirth. Of the 241 participants who reported new onset of chronic widespread pain, approximately one-third were more likely than other participants to report at least one physically traumatic event during the study period. Furthermore, participants who reported being in a car accident had an 84% increased risk of developing chronic widespread pain.
