Despite the fact that significant awareness has been raised about the prevalence of and dangers associated with nursing home abuse in recent years, it remains a serious problem in Oklahoma and throughout the United States. In fact, according to a CNN report on nursing home abuse, nearly one out of every three nursing homes in the U.S. had been cited for a nursing home abuse violation as of 2001. What’s more, the report indicates that between January 1, 1999 and January 1, 2001, all violations reported in nursing home “had at least the potential to harm nursing home residents.” In the years since this revealing report was issued, nursing home abuse lawsuits have been filed and laws have been passed in an effort to reduce the incidence of nursing home abuse in our country. Unfortunately, the problem persists. If you suspect a loved one has suffered from physical or emotional harm caused by nursing home abuse or neglect in Oklahoma, contact our experienced nursing home abuse attorneys at Oklahoma Legal Center today.

Nursing Home Abuse is Widespread

Just last month, two employees of an Oklahoma nursing home facility called Quail Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center were fired after being accused of nursing home abuse perpetrated against a 96-year-old resident suffering from dementia. The resident’s family members suspected that someone was stealing from the woman’s room and installed a hidden camera to catch the thief. Instead, the footage captured two nursing home staff members physically abusing the resident, an elderly, ill woman who was unable to defend herself against her attackers or report the abuse because of her condition.

This case of nursing home abuse in Oklahoma certainly isn’t an isolated instance; nursing home abuse occurs all over the country, and the associated consequences are sometimes fatal. An 88-year-old man residing in a Colorado nursing home facility passed away in 2010 as a result of complications associated with a large bedsore that had become infected. The man’s family took him to the hospital due to his failing health, and when he was examined, the doctor deemed that he had several bedsores and was malnourished and dehydrated. Unfortunately, the elderly man passed away soon after he was examined, and doctors determined that his death was a direct result of the untreated bedsores.
