Potential Side Effects of Yaz Birth Control Pill

Oklahoma resident Brandy Armantrout began taking Bayer’s Yaz oral contraceptive in 2007, and ended up in the hospital in December 2012, when she began feeling a tingling sensation in her left arm. Doctors reportedly couldn’t find a pulse in Armantrout’s left wrist, and when her hand turned black, they had to amputate the arm below the elbow. Armantrout was only 32 at that time, and discovered that her medical insurance would not cover a prosthetic limb. She decided to file a Yaz lawsuit to recover damages for the side effects that she believes caused the blood clot and deep vein thrombosis. In the event of a judgment or settlement in her favor, Armantrout would have money to help pay for the cost of her prosthetic limb, in addition to future medical expenses and physical therapy.

Yaz, Yasmin Lawsuits Filed Against Bayer

Bayer faces a growing number of lawsuits filed on behalf of former Yaz and Yasmin users, the majority of which involve allegations of side effects leading to deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and other serious medical conditions. These birth control pills have long been associated with DVT in particular, in which a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the body and can travel to different parts of the body, possibly leading to devastating side effects like stroke, heart attack and pulmonary embolism. In Armantrout’s case, she suffered a complication known as limb ischaemia, which can result in excess pressure in the veins, possibly leading to ulcers in the legs, tissue damage requiring amputation and infections like gangrene.
